Stereospecific microwave-assisted conversion of a Ru(ii)-p-cymene complex to a solar cell dye in water

Abstract

Microwave irradiation of an aqueous mixture of the ubiquitous Ru(II)-p-cymene complex and 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine followed by similar irradiation after the addition of potassium isothiocyanate affords exclusively cis-dithiocyanato-bis(4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine)-ruthenium(II), cis-RuL2(NCS)2.
