Preparation and properties of bio-based polycarbonate/clay nanocomposites

Abstract

1,4:3,6-Dianhydro-D-sorbitol (isosorbide)-based polycarbonate (ISPC)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared by mixing ISPC with an organophilic clay in a solvent. The organophilic clay Cloisite 30B provided the best results. In these ISPC/clay nanocomposites, the silicate layers of the clay were exfoliated and dispersed uniformly in the ISPC polymers. The storage moduli (E′) of these ISPC/clay nanocomposites were also higher than that of neat ISPC.
