Guest-dependent self-assembly of (R,R)-2,3-diphenylsuccinic acids :  formation of a cyclotetrameric chiral square

Abstract

A chiral crystalline inclusion complex containing four molecules of (+)-(R,R)−1 and one molecule of diethyl ether was grown from diethyl ether with a diffusion of hexane, and its structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. Since this guest-dependent self-assembled cage was presumed to be chiral with D4 symmetry, its potential as an enantiomer separator was examined.
