The crystal structures of three novel lutidinium pamoate salts

Abstract

A series of lutidinium pamoate salts with stoichiometry 1 : 2 pamoate : lutidinium has been prepared and characterised. The crystal structures of three of these salts are reported and discussed in the context of the known structures of lutidinium pamoate solvates. Hydrogen bonded base–acid–base units form in all three structures, and it is shown that the bulky pamoate ion appears not as structure-directing as previously suggested. Attempts to understand the relationships between the various salts and solvates in this series through mechanochemical and solution-phase experiments are also described. The various conformations of the pamoate moiety observed in these salts have been investigated computationally.
