The origin of the ring current in the all-metal aromatic, Al42−

Abstract

Apparent contradictions between ipsocentric, Nucleus-Independent Chemical Shift (NICS) and Gauge-Including Magnetically Induced Current (GIMIC) evaluations of ring current aromaticity in Al42− are resolved in favour of the description of this all-metal system as σ aromatic on the magnetic criterion.
