Modified calix[8]arenes as new cross-linkers in free radical copolymerization

Abstract

A new family of multifunctional calix[8]arenes substituted by seven or eight 4-vinylbenzyl, acrylate or methacrylate groups at the lower rim has been prepared. Here we have demonstrated that octamethacrylate calix[8]arene 2a has been an efficient cross-linker for polystyrene chains. Using suspension polymerisation methodology, new thermoset calixarenestyrene copolymers were synthesized. Copolymer beads have been characterized by IRTF, DSC and BET. The resulting gel consisted of a solid polymer network containing the covalently bound calixarene.
