β-Hydride shift involvement in the acid catalysed decomposition of [(H2O)5CrIII–C(CH3)2OH]2+

Abstract

Propene has been found to be a major product of the acid catalysed decomposition of [(H2O)5CrIII–C(CH3)2OH]2+. It is proposed that this complex isomerizes via a β-hydride shift step to form [(H2O)5CrIII–CH2CH(CH3)OH]2+ which decomposes via β-hydroxide elimination.
