Synthesis and characterisation of ruthenium carbonyl fluorides

Abstract

The oxidative fluorination of [Ru 3 (CO) 12 ] with XeF 2 in anhydrous HF afforded, in solution, cis-[RuF 2 (CO) 4 ] as the major product with [RuF(CO) 5 ] + , [Ru 2 F 4 (CO) 7 ], [{RuF(CO) 4 } 2 (µ-F)] + , mer- and fac-[RuF 3 (CO) 3 ] - , [{RuF 2 (CO) 3 } n ] and [{RuF 2 (CO) 3 }(µ-F){Ru(CO) 5 }] + as minor products, all of which have been characterised by 13 C, 19 F and 13 C-{ 19 F} NMR spectroscopies. Removal of the HF solvent in vacuo yielded tetrameric [{RuF 2 (CO) 3 } 4 ].
