Aqueous-phase pKa of the methyl group in acetic acid

Abstract

The gas-phase acidity of the α-hydrogens of acetic acid and the aqueous-phase pK a of ethyl acetate are combined with other literature values in a thermodynamic cycle to provide the aqueous-phase pK a of the methyl group of acetic acid as 22.7 ± 1.0 and the pK a of the enol of acetic acid as 3.3 ± 1.0.
