Synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry of the novel ferrocenyl-dienediyltriosmium cluster [Os3(CO)934-Fe[C5H4(C2SiMe3)]2}]

Abstract

The reaction between [Os3(CO)10(MeCN)2] and [Fe{C5H4(C2SiMe3)}2] yielded [Os3(CO)1032-Fe[C5H4(C2SiMe3)]2}]1 and the decarbonylated product of this complex, [Os3(CO)934-Fe[C5H4(C2SiMe3)]2}]2, the structure of which has been shown by X-ray crystallography to incorporate a triosmium cluster linked via a metallobutadienyl ligand to a ferrocene unit; the cyclic voltammogram of 2 shows a reversible one-electron oxidation of the ferrocene unit and an irreversible two-electron reduction for the triosmium unit.
