Environmental tobacco smoke exposure of smokers relative to non-smokers

Abstract

Personal air monitoring of smokers and non-smokers was conducted continuously for five days in Columbus, OH. Diffusion-based monitors were used which collected 3-ethenylpyridine (3-EP) and nicotine, two gas-phase environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) components which have been studied widely as potential markers of ETS exposure. It was determined that smokers experience, on average, 10.6–21.2 times more ETS exposure than non-smokers, based on 3-EP and nicotine, respectively.
