Intercalation of the copper(II) phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate anion (CuPcTs4–) into basic copper(II) salts

Abstract

Intercalation of the copper(II) phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate (CuPcTs4–) anion by exchange into basic copper salts with NO3 or CH3CO2 as the interlayer anion has been studied. No intercalation took place with the basic copper(II) nitrate Cu2(OH)3NO3(BCN). In contrast, CuPcTs4– anions were readily intercalated into basic copper(II) acetate Cu2(OH)3CH3CO2(BCA) such that the anions were orientated with the molecular planes approximately perpendicular to the Cu2(OH)3+ layers of the host material. This difference in the intercalation properties between BCN and BCA may be mainly related to the difference between their gallery heights (3.4 and 5.8 Å, respectively) and the intersectional diameter (5.5 Å) of the CuPcTs4– anion.
