Third-order NLO properties of metal complexes containing delocalised nitrogen donor ligands

Abstract

Complexes of 3,4-toluenediamine, [M(tdi)2] where M = Ni, Pd or Pt, and 3,4-benzophenonediamine, [Ni(bpdi)2], have been synthesized and the value of χ(3) has been determined in DMSO at 1064 nm by the retroreflection DFWM technique. A value for χ(3) of 10.3 × 10–13 esu was observed for [Ni(bpdi)2] with a ratio of χ(3)xxxx(3)xyyx, suggesting a non-linear process that is predominantly electronic.
