The diazonium compounds 4-dialkylamino-4′-phenylazobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate are synthesised and their molecular hyperpolarizabilities (β) measured with the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique; the diazonium compounds show much larger β values than the corresponding nitro compounds.
