Condensation products from the reactions of glyoxal with 2-substituted benzylamines. The formation and crystal structures of 2,2′-bi(1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinazoline), and 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexakis(2-methylbenzyl)-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane

Abstract

Condensation of glyoxal with 2-aminobenzylamine produces the novel compound 2,2′-bi(1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinazoline), 6, the structure of which has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography. However, reaction of glyoxal with other 2-substituted benzylamines yields hexabenzylhexa-azaisowurtzitanes. The crystal structure of the derivative prepared from 2-methylbenzylamine has been determined and is compared with that of the derivative from 4-chlorobenzylamine.
