Cyclobutarenes. Part 4. Biphenyleno[2,1-a]biphenylene

Abstract

Flash vacuum thermolysis of [5,6]phenanthrolino[4,3-c][5,6]phenanthroline 6 gave biphenyleno[2,1-a]biphenylene 2. The properties of this system are compared with those of the previously reported biphenylenobiphenylenes 3 and 4, and are in accord with expectations from simple resonance theory.
