The preparation and solid-state structure of Ru5C(CO)134-C4Ph4): the first cluster to carry a cyclobutadiene ring

Abstract

The new organometallic pentaruthenium cluster Ru5C(CO)134-C4Ph4) has been prepared from the redox mediated ligand transfer reaction between [Ru5C(CO)14]2– and [Pd(η4-C4Ph4)(acetone)3]2+ during which the four-membered ring transfers from the palladium cation to a cluster ruthenium atom; the cluster has been characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
