Determination of trace amounts of acetic acid in acetic anhydride by fluoride isoconcentration using a cell without a liquid junction

Abstract

The large and systematic change in cell potential resulting from the addition of 0–1% m/m of acetic acid to a mixture of acetic anhydride containing 10% m/m propylene carbonate, 1 × 10–3 mol l–1 tetraethylammonium fluoride and sodium perchlorate as background electrolyte, using fluoride and sodium electrodes, provides a graphical method for the rapid determination of acetic acid in acetic anhydride. Readings obtained by direct potentiometry show good reproducibility and simplicity of operation, and compare favourably with the IR method.
