Electrochemical oxidative determination of thimerosal in soft contact lens care solutions by cyclic voltammetry

Abstract

The electrochemical oxidation of thimerosal (TMS) was studied by cyclic voltammetry on a rotating glassy carbon disc electrode. The best results were obtained for TMS solutions adjusted to pH 4.0 with acetate buffer solutions and a scan rate of 40 mV s–1. The limit of detection obtained ranged from 0.1 to 0.09 µg ml–1 and the method was applied to the determination of TMS in soft contact lens care solutions with good results, the accuracy required being about 5–10%.
