Lithiation of bis(azol-1-yl)methanes and subsequent reaction with electrophiles yields selectively monoand di-ring-substituted derivatives. The regioselectivity observed is explained in terms of the structure of the substrate, the hard and soft acids and bases principle, and the nature of the electrophile used.
