Synthesis and characterisation of some non-uniformly substituted mesogenic phthalocyanines

Abstract

Eleven phthalocyanine derivatives substituted asymmetrically with a total of eight alkyl and hydroxyalkyl substituents at the non-peripheral sites, or with six non-peripheral alkyl chains and a dioxolane group at the peripheral positions, have been prepared by unambiguous syntheses. All exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour which has been characterised using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy.
