Isolation and characterisation of iron(II) complexes with dinitrogen, and of other derivatives, especially from phenylacetylene

Abstract

The complex [FeCl2(dmpe)2](dmpe = Me2PCH2CH2PMe2) dissolves in alcohols under dinitrogen to yield the dinitrogen complex [FeCl(N2)(dmpe)2]+. Reactions of [FeCl2(dmpe)2] with PhC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH yield the interconvertible acetylide and vinylidene complexes [FeCl(C[triple bond, length half m-dash]CPh)(dmpe)2] and [FeCl(C[double bond, length half m-dash]CHPh)(dmpe)2]+, the structures of which have been determined. Related complexes of Et2PCH2CH2PEt2 have been prepared, as well as similar complexes containing ligands such as MeNC, CO, etc.
