Metathesis vs. Polymerization of terminal acetylenes over [W(CBut)(OBut)3]

Abstract

Terminal acetylenes RC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH Are transformed catalytically in to matathesis product in to methathesis products RC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CR and C2H2 on the carbine complex [W(CBut)(OBut)3], a polymerization of the alkyne; in the case of sterically hindered ButC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH, a stoichiometric reaction is observed, by which a dinuclear compound µ-C2H2[W(OBut)3]21 and the deporotiotungstenacyclobutadiene [WC3(But)2(OBut)2]2 are formed.
