Synthesis and structure of sulfide aluminate sodalites

Abstract

The compounds Sr8[Al12O24]S2 and Ca8[Al12O24]S2 have been prepared by reduction of the corresponding sulfate materials, M64[Al96O192]·(SO4)16via an intra-cage reaction. The materials crystallise with the simple body-centred cubic sodalite structure. Profile refinement of powder X-ray data has been undertaken showing a tetrahedral coordination around sulfur and a distorted sevenfold coordination for the alkaline-earth metals.
