Solid superacids: the alumina/ZrCl4 system

Abstract

The physico-chemical and catalytic properties of alumina exposed to ZrCl4 vapour have been studied. It was found that ZrCl4 reacts with both basic surface OH groups and exposed O2– ions forming Lewis superacid centres as well as Brønsted acid sites. The mechanism of n-pentane low-temperature isomerization involving H abstraction from the alkane has been postulated.
