Probing the dynamics of organic molecules adsorbed on zeolite ZSM-5 by quasielastic neutron scattering

Abstract

Toluene, 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorotoluene and hexafluorobenzene have been used as molecular probes to study the dynamics of molecules adsorbed on zeolite ZSM-5. Neutron scattering reveals a sharp drop in scattered count at temperatures corresponding to a reorientation of adsorbed organic molecules, indicating bulk melting behaviour of the highly dilute adsorbed organics. The concept of bulk behaviour of very small molecular clusters is discussed.
