Interpretation of the halochromism of pyridiniophenoxide dyes

Abstract

The halochromic behaviour of some pyridiniophenoxide dyes in the presence of sodium iodide is described in a variety of protic and aprotic solvents. It is suggested that the observed halochromic shifts mainly reflect perturbations in the microenvironment of the phenoxide moiety of the dyes, caused by the proximity of solvated cations.
