Investigations of halonium ions in the gas phase
Abstract
The mechanisms involved in the formation of monomethyl halonium and dimethyl halonium ions in the gas phase have been investigated using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and a quinqua quadrupole mass spectrometer. The results indicate that the mechanism for formation of the halonium ions is analogous to the SN2 nucleophilic addition with elimination mechanism previously reported for the formation of oxonium ions.
