A novel synthesis of cyclobutane sesquiterpenes, (±)-italicene and (±)isoitalicene

Abstract

Cyclobutane sesquiterpenes (±)-italicene 1 and (±)-isoitalicene 2 have been synthesised from the benzocyclobutene derivative 20 employing an intramolecular γ-alkylation of the β,γ-unsaturated ketone 25 as a key reaction.
