Photophysical properties of meso-substituted octaethylporphines and their zinc complexes

Abstract

The absorption and emission spectral properties of a series of meso-substituted octaethylporphines and their zinc complexes have been investigated. Changes in electronic absorption spectra induced by the substituents can be explained by Gouterman's ‘four-orbital’ model. In order to account fully for the effect of the meso-substituent on the photophysical properties, the steric factor of the meso-substituent has to be taken into consideration.
