1H nuclear magnetic resonance studies of the association of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene with naphthalene and methylnaphthalenes

Abstract

The interactions of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene with naphthalene and methylnaphthalenes in cyclohexane have been studied using 1H NMR. The stoichiometry, equilibrium constants (Kc) and the induced chemical shifts (Δc) of the complexes were determined using the modified NMR Job method. The values of the equilibrium parameters were found to be in close agreement with those obtained from a conventional procedure using cyclohexane as solvent and internal reference: the use of an internal reference was justified by comparison with the dispersed water phase (DP) referencing technique. The agreement between the results obtained from the two experimental procedures employed provided vindication of the NMR adaptation of the Job method.
