Liquid-phase adsorption of ethanol–water mixtures on NaZSM-5 zeolite with inorganic and organic binders

Abstract

A study was made of the adsorption of ethanol–water mixtures on NaSM-5 zeolite pelletized with inorganic and organic binders. For the characterization of the pellets the excess isotherms and the isotherms of the enthalpies of displacement were determined. The excess isotherms were analysed by means of the models of energetically homogeneous and heterogeneous adsorbents. It is shown that the inorganic binders SiO2 and Al2O3 decrease the hydrophobicity of the pentasil zeolite, while cellulose acetate has no influence on it. A comparison of the composition of the adsorbed phase with the displacement factors, which lead to the excess enthalpy of the adsorbed phase, demonstrates that the adsorption of the molecules of the mixture is different on the various binders.
