Notes. Preparation and X-ray crystal structure of the adduct WCl4S·S8

Abstract

Treatment of [W(CO)6] with S2Cl2 under Reflux in CH2Cl2 with irradiation gives the dark red complex WCl4S·S8, shown by its X-ray crystal structure to have a monomeric, square-pyramidal WCl4S unit with apical S [d(W–S)= 2.077(3); mean d(W–Cl)= 2.292(3)Å] and with an S8 molecule occupying a position below the Cl4 plane, trans to the terminal sulphide ligand.
