Notes. Preparation and X-ray crystal structure of the adduct WCl4S·S8

Abstract

Treatment of [W(CO)₆] with S₂Cl₂ under Reflux in CH₂Cl₂ with irradiation gives the dark red complex WCl₄S·S₈, shown by its X-ray crystal structure to have a monomeric, square-pyramidal WCl₄S unit with apical S [d(W–S)= 2.077(3); mean d(W–Cl)= 2.292(3)Å] and with an S₈ molecule occupying a position below the Cl₄ plane, trans to the terminal sulphide ligand.
