Methods for comparing the performances of flame atomisers for atomic absorption spectrometry

Abstract

Some criteria for comparing the performances of flame atomisers in atomic absorption spectrometry are discussed, and are used to assess several combinations of commercially made spray chambers and burners. Tests are proposed for assessing flame atomisers in the analysis of real samples, particularly solutions of high solute content. The speed of burner blockage in such instances is strongly affected by the mass flow-rate of aerosol through the burner slot, by the aerosol drop-size characteristics and by the condition of the internal surfaces of the burner slot. A new burner with a flared slot, which is particularly free from blockage problems, is described and evaluated. Criteria are suggested for comparing the safety aspects of burners used with dinitrogen oxide-acetylene flames.
