Highly luminescing rhenium(I) heterocyclic ligand tetracarbonyl complexes

Abstract

The photophysical properties and crystal structure of [Re(bpm)(CO)4](BF4)(bpm = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) are described: it is revealed that the Re–C(CO) bond distances to the CO ligands trans to each other are longer (2.03 Å) than to the CO ligands trans to bpm (1.93 Å), and that the cation luminesces strongly in acetonitrile (ϕr 0.050, λem 543 nm, λox 355 nm, τ 390 ns) at room temperature and undergoes reductive quenching to generate powerful organic and inorganic oxidizing agents.
