Flow injection flame atomic absorption spectrometry system for the pre-concentration of vanadium(V) and characterisation of vanadium(IV) and -(V) species

Abstract

The sensitivity of flow injection (Fl) flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) for vanadium determinations has been enhanced using an on-line pre-concentrating ion-exchange column. Various silica bonded ion-exchange resins have been evaluated for the pre-concentration and separation of vanadium ions. A suitable strong anion exchange (SAX) column was selected and integrated into the Fl system with susbequent vanadium determination by FAAS using a dinitrogen oxide-acetylene flame. It was established that VV species could be pre-concentrated on the selected column and quantitatively identified at the 50 p.p.b. level with a corresponding relative standard deviation of 3%.
