Theoretical studies of the blue luminescence in α-quartz

Abstract

The radiation-induced blue (2.8 eV) luminescence in quartz is associated with the decay of a metastable state which appears to be intrinsic. It has been speculated that this centre is a form of self-trapped exciton. We describe calculations that test microscopic models of the defect.
