Viscosities of alkali-metal chlorides and bromides in 2-methoxyethanol at 25 and 35 °C

Abstract

The relative viscosities for solutions of several alkali-metal chlorides and bromides in 2-methoxyethanol have been determined at 25 and 35 °C. Viscosity B coefficients were positive and decreased as the size of the alkali-metal ion increased with the exception of sodium halides; the values were greater for bromides than for chlorides. The thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated using the transition-state treatment and temperature-coefficient measurements. The ionic B coefficients and other single-ion parameters have been determined using the ‘reference electrolyte’ method. The results indicate that the Na+ ion behaves as a structure-maker whereas others are structure-breakers in this solvent medium.
