Dielectric studies of association in phenol and 2-alkyl-substituted phenols

Abstract

Dielectric studies have been made in the frequency range 106–109 Hz over an appropriate temperature range on phenol and four alkyl-substituted phenols in weakly electron donating solvents and in two dialkylethers. The four alkyl-substituted phenols have been examined also as pure liquids. Mean relaxation times and enthalpies of activation have been evaluated for all these systems. The influence of steric factors on these parameters has been explored and speculations advanced as to the nature of the associated species.
