Synthesis and structural characterisation of [Au8Cl2(PPh3)6Rh(CNC 8H9)2](PF6): a novel hetero-metallic cluster compound of gold with a hemi-spherical topology

Abstract

[Au8Cl2(PPh3)6 Rh(CNC8H9)2](PF6) has been synthesised by the NaBH4 reduction of a mixture of Au(PPh3)Cl and Rh(CNC8H9)3Cl, and a single crystal X-ray study has shown that it has a hemispherical geometry of gold atoms based on an icosahedron, with the rhodium atom occupying the centre of the open face and bonded to all eight gold atoms.
