The association and solvation of formamide in pyridine and picolines

Abstract

Topological investigations of the volumetric and enthalpic effect in mixtures of formamide (A) and pyridine or α-, β- or γ-picoline (B) have indicated that the state of association of (A) in an (A + B) mixture is dictated by the molecular entity B and that the magnitude of the attractive B–B interactions in the various picolines (B) varies in the order βγ > α. The energetics of the solution process characteristic of these (A–B) mixtures have also been investigated. The results obtained are rationalized by graph-theoretical arguments.
