Extraction-chromatographic separation of thallium(III) from citrate media with a high relative molecular mass amine

Abstract

Thallium(III) was extracted from 0.005 M citric acid between pH 3.5 and 6.0 on a silica gel column impregnated with Aliquat 336S. The thallium was then stripped with 1 M perchloric acid and determined spectrophotometrically at 610 nm as its complex with Crystal Violet. Using this method, thallium could be separated from s- and p-block elements in binary mixtures and from bismuth, germanium, tin, aluminium and lead in multi-component mixtures. The method was applied to the determination of thallium in sediments and in high purity zinc.
