Selective collection of fluoride ion on an anion-exchange resin loaded with alizarin fluorine blue sulphonate

Abstract

Alizarin fluorine blue sulphonate {3-[N,N-di(carboxymethyl)aminomethyl]-1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone-5-sulphonate}(AFBS) was synthesised and its lanthanum complex (AFBS-La) was immobilised on an anion-exchange resin. The resin loaded with AFBS-La was found to be useful for the selective collection of trace amounts of fluoride ion. The presence of the sulphonate group in the reagent enhances the reaction rate of the immobilisation of the reagent on the resin and increases the amount of the reagent that can be loaded on to the resin and the resin stability. The resin loaded with AFBS is superior in the collection of fluoride ions to that loaded with alizarin fluorine blue.
