Bromimetric determination of some benzothiadiazine diuretics in dosage forms

Abstract

A simple titrimetric method was developed for the determination of some benzothiadiazine diuretics in dosage forms, involving the use of 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or N-bromosuccinimide as the titrant. A known excess volume of either reagent is added and, after a specified time, the residual reagent is determined iodimetrically. The stoicheiometry of the reaction was assessed and a proposal for the reaction pathway is presented. The reaction products were isolated and identified by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The results were compared statistically with those obtained using N-bromosuccinimide and official methods, and were found to be in good agreement.
