Tandem Wittig reactions of 1,1-diphenylphosphorinanium salt

Abstract

The title cyclic phosphonium salt (1) reacted with various aldehydes to give the phosphine oxides (2ad) in good yield; these when treated with aldehydes in the presence of BuLi gave the alcohols (4a, b). The alcohol (4a) was easily converted into the 1,6-diene (5) by treatment of NaH in DMF. The stereoselectivities of these reactions are also described.
