Vibrational dephasing in liquid 1,4-dioxane

Abstract

Vibrational correlation functions and vibrational relaxation times for C—H stretching and ring-breathing vibrations of 1,4-dioxane in the pure liquid and in aqueous and carbon tetrachloride solutions have been obtained from spontaneous Raman scattering. For the pure liquid the results showed a slight increase in vibrational relaxation times associated with the C—H stretching with increasing temperature and a decrease in the vibrational relaxation times associated with the ring breathing. In solution, the vibrational relaxation times associated with the same vibrations decrease upon dilution with water and increase upon dilution with carbon tetrachloride. These variations are interpreted in terms of the intermolecular potentials.
