Effect of hydroxylamine on chemiluminescence intensity generated during the oxidation of pyrogallol with periodate

Abstract

The chemiluminescence that was generated during the oxidation of pyrogallol with periodate was relatively weak compared with the intensities given by other chemiluminescent compounds. The addition of hydroxylamine to the reaction mixture increased the chemiluminescence intensity 4–5-fold. From the discussion of the enhancement effect the conclusion is reached that hydroxylamine forms a product with pyrogallol (or some oxidation product of pyrogallol) which acts as a sensitiser. Finally, analytical applications of enhanced chemiluminscence emission, generated during the course of pyrogallol oxidation with periodate using a flow injection analysis technique, are considered.
