Application of high-performance liquid chromatography to the analysis of essential oils. Part 1. Determination of bergaptene. (4-methoxyfuro[3,2-g]chromen-7-one)(8-methoxypsoralen) in oils of bergamot

Abstract

A method is described for the determination of bergaptene (4-methoxyfuro[3,2-g] chromen-7-one) by HPLC. A solution of the oil in chloroform is chromatographed on a silica Si 60 column using hexane-ethyl acetate-propan-2-ol (88 + 10 + 2) as the eluent. A method for the preparation of a pure specimen of bergaptene for use as a reference standard is given.
