Reactions of recoil 38Cl atoms with dichloroethanes

Abstract

The formation of 38Cl-labelled chloromethanes and chloroethanes has been investigated in neutron-irradiated 1,1-dichloroethane, in its mixtures with C2H5OH and C6F6 as well as in 1,2-dichloroethane in the liquid and solid phases. Some conclusions on the role of hot and thermal processes in the 38Cl-for-Cl and 38Cl-for-H replacement have been drawn. Radical rearrangement involving 1,2-hydrogen shift has been assumed as a means of interpreting the formation of isomeric labelled compounds in the course of 38Cl-for-Cl replacement in some of the systems studied. The effect of the medium on excitation decomposition of some initially formed hot replacement products has also been established.
