Free-energy parameters for the complexation of metal ions and cryptand 222 in propan-1-ol and for the transfer and partition of cryptand 222 in water–alcohol systems

Abstract

Stability constants and derived free energies for the complexation reaction between cryptand 222 and alkali-metal and silver ions in propan-1-ol and for lithium in ethanol are reported. Free-energies of transfer of cryptand 222 from water to ethanol and to propan-1-ol have been obtained through solubility measurements. The results indicate that no appreciable variation is found in the transfer of this ligand from water to methanol, to ethanol and to propan-1-ol. Partition data for cryptand 222 in the water–higher aliphatic alcohol (saturated with water) mixture reflects the influence of water in the alcoholic phase. Free energies of transfer of metal-ion cryptates from water to ethanol and to propan-1-ol have been derived.
